Denu residents threaten to abandon electricity over ECG billing issues
The Assembly member for Denu in the Ketu South Municipality, Israel Bossman, has warned that residents may be forced to stop using electricity if the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) does not resolve ongoing billing system issues.
Residents recently protested against what they describe as excessive monthly tariffs, claiming that the ECG’s billing system in the Denu District is overcharging them beyond their actual consumption.
They are calling for a review of the billing mechanisms to ensure fair and accurate charges.
In an interview with Citi News, Israel Bossman stressed the urgency of the situation, describing the current billing practices as extortionate and demanding immediate corrective measures.
He urged the ECG to stop disconnecting customers and to address the flaws in the billing system, including auditing some meters in the area.
According to Bossman, the situation has become so dire that some residents are taking out loans to pay their electricity bills. He warned that if the issue is not resolved, residents might abandon the use of electricity altogether.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer for the ECG in the Volta Region, Eunice Tweneboah-Kodua, stated that the company has addressed the grievances raised by the consumers.
She acknowledged that while the same issues were reiterated in a recent petition, the ECG is continuing to look into the matter to ensure all concerns are fully resolved.
