Turkey blocks access to Instagram with no reason given
Instagram has been blocked in Turkey, with the country’s Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) announcing the decision on Friday.
The BTK’s website notes: “Instagram.com has been blocked by the decision of the Information Technologies and Communication Authority dated 02/08/2024 and numbered 490.05.01.2024.-608983.”
The block follows criticism from Turkey’s Head of Communication, Fahrettin Altun, who accused Instagram of censoring condolence posts related to the death of Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas political bureau chief.
Haniyeh was killed in an airstrike in Tehran, Iran earlier in the week. Hamas labeled Haniyeh a “martyr” and blamed Israel for the attack.
Altun condemned both Israel and Instagram, stating: “No matter how many Palestinians Israel kills, the just cause of Palestine will not be erased from history.”
He added, “The state of Israel will also go down in history as the perpetrator of extrajudicial killings, assassinations, occupation and genocide.”
He criticized Instagram for allegedly blocking posts of condolence, calling it “a very clear attempt at censorship.”
