Anti-LGBTQ bill proponents plan protest against Chief Justice over delays
Proponents of the anti-LGBTQ bill have announced plans to demonstrate against the Chief Justice on August 21, 2024, citing delays in the process of transmitting the bill to the President.
The Supreme Court deferred the ruling on injunction applications by Dr. Amanda Odoi and broadcast journalist Richard Sky regarding the transmission of the anti-LGBTQ bill to the President, deciding instead to deliver the ruling on the same day as the final judgment.
Samuel Nartey George, the lead sponsor of the anti-LGBTQ bill, revealed the protest plans during a courtesy call on the National Chief Imam and the Acting President of the Osu Traditional Council, accompanied by some minority members.
He emphasized the intention for a peaceful protest to ensure the bill is sent to the President for assent. He stated, “We want to do a peaceful march on the 21st of August to the Chief Justice because right now it is not the president that is holding it. It is the Chief Justice. She is the one who is preventing parliament from sending it to the president.”
He further added, “The people of Ghana just want her to do what we pay her salary for. Hear the case and give a judgment. If you don’t give a judgment, we are all hanging in the air.”
The protest aims to expedite the judicial process and ensure the bill’s transmission to the President.
