EC aims to register 50,000 to 70,000 new voters in upcoming mop-up exercise
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana aims to register between 50,000 to 70,000 new voters in its upcoming mop-up voter registration exercise, scheduled from Thursday, August 1 to Saturday, August 3, 2024.
This three-day exercise targets individuals who turned 18 after the recent limited voter registration and those who were unable to register previously.
Addressing a news conference in Accra, Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Operations, announced that the Commission has designated its 268 District Offices, 26 Public Universities, and 41 Prison Centres nationwide for the exercise. Registration will take place daily from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
The registration will be conducted online, and the EC has collaborated with Mobile Telecommunication Network (MTN) to ensure stable internet connectivity during the process.
This initiative follows the Limited Voter Registration Exercise conducted between May 7 and 29, 2024, which added 778,447 voters to the electoral roll.
Currently, the provisional number of registered voters stands at 18,681,366. The mop-up exercise is part of efforts to create an inclusive Voters Register ahead of the 2024 General Election.
Eligible applicants must present a Ghana Card or Ghana Passport as proof of eligibility at the designated registration centers.
In the absence of these documents, two registered voters must act as guarantors, in accordance with Regulation 2 of CI 91 as amended by CI 126. Each registered voter can guarantee for a maximum of 10 individuals.
Political parties are allowed to send agents to observe the registration process, and the Ghana Police Service will provide security at registration centers to ensure a peaceful environment.
The EC has urged applicants, registration officials, and political party agents to conduct themselves professionally to ensure a smooth exercise.
The EC has also scheduled the exhibition of the Voters Register from August 20 to 27, 2024, at all polling stations nationwide.
Registered voters are encouraged to verify their details in the voters register either by visiting their polling stations or using a shortcode to check electronically.
