John Mahama pledges to overhaul Free SHS policy, take away double-track system

The flagbearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama, has reaffirmed his commitment to revamping Ghana’s Free SHS policy.

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has reaffirmed his commitment to revamping Ghana’s Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

This announcement came during the NDC’s campaign launch held in Tamale, where Mahama addressed numerous challenges and the persistent calls for a review of the policy by various stakeholders.

Mahama articulated his vision for an enhanced educational system, emphasizing the need to abolish the contentious double-track system, which has been a major point of contention since its implementation. He assured that under his leadership, all SHS students would be able to attend school simultaneously, eliminating the staggered schedule that currently disrupts the academic calendar.

“We’re going to improve the Free SHS. We’re going to work hard to remove the obnoxious double-track system so that all our children can go to school at the same time and close at the same time,” John Mahama promised. He underscored the importance of a consistent school schedule to ensure that students do not face extended breaks, which he believes hampers their educational progress.

“We don’t want a situation where our children come home and stay for four months before they return to school,” he added, pledging to make significant changes to the policy if elected in the 2024 general elections.
