Bawumia pledges to prioritize agriculture, vows collaboration with Brazil and China
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced that agriculture will be his top priority if elected President in the 2024 general elections.
He assured farmers that he would collaborate with countries like Brazil and China, which have higher crop productivity, to adopt best practices and technologies.
During a courtesy call on Sandem-Nab, Nab Azaksuk Azantilow, Paramount Chief of the Builsa Traditional Area in the Upper East Region, as part of his campaign tour, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his commitment to transforming the agricultural sector.
He pledged to establish District Agricultural Mechanisation centres across farming districts, providing affordable equipment to expand production.
He highlighted the importance of bringing in best practices from countries with high productivity in crops such as maize and rice, aiming to adopt technologies that yield significantly higher per acre outputs.
Furthermore, Dr. Bawumia expressed his intention to shift Ghana’s focus away from chemical fertilizers, advocating for the use of lime to improve soil fertility.
He pointed out that Ghana has abundant limestone, which is a cheaper and potentially more effective alternative to chemical fertilizers and promised to support farmers in adopting this new soil treatment method.
