A/R: Fire destroys KNUST hostel, leaving students homeless

A devastating fire broke out on Thursday night at KNUST, reducing a three-storey accommodation facility known as "Father Hostel" to ruins.

A devastating fire broke out on Thursday night at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), reducing a three-storey accommodation facility known as “Father Hostel” to ruins.

The blaze, which severely damaged the student hostel, has left at least nine rooms completely destroyed and rendered the remaining structure uninhabitable.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. However, nine students have lost all their belongings and are now without a place to stay. Witnesses recounted that the fire began in a single room before rapidly spreading throughout the building, consuming valuables within minutes.

Eyewitnesses also noted that initial attempts to reach the KNUST Fire Department were unsuccessful, resulting in a 30-minute delay before emergency responders could arrive at the scene.

In response to the disaster, the KNUST Students’ Representative Council (SRC) has arranged temporary accommodation for the affected students at the SRC hostel. The council is also urging all students to adhere to safety protocols to prevent future incidents.
