“Inside Out 2” becomes highest-grossing animated film ever
The sequel “Inside Out 2” has shattered records by becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time, amassing $1.46 billion globally and surpassing the previous record held by “Frozen 2” from 2019, Disney announced on Wednesday.
The success of “Inside Out 2” comes as a welcome boost to Hollywood, which has been struggling with a sluggish summer box office and the lingering effects of last year’s writers’ and actors’ strikes.
Released last month, “Inside Out 2” crossed the $1 billion threshold in just 19 days, the fastest any animated film has achieved this milestone.
As it enters its sixth week in theaters, it has already become the 13th highest-grossing film of all time.
Daniel Loria, editorial director at Box Office Pro, commented, “From Europe to Asia, the Middle East, and the US, ‘Inside Out 2’ is seeing incredible, record-breaking numbers. It’s definitely a great success story for movie theaters globally.”
The film has made significant strides in the Americas, setting records in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, and Uruguay.
With its upcoming release in Japan, Loria anticipates even higher figures, noting the film earned $84 million in Asia and the Pacific within just 12 days of release.
“This film has reinvigorated the global box office and reestablished momentum that we haven’t seen since the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon last summer,” Loria added.
The success of “Inside Out 2” has been especially significant given the slow start to the summer movie season.
Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, said, “The record-breaking performance of ‘Inside Out 2’ has been crucial for movie theaters, turning around an industry mood that had begun to see the summer season as a potential box office failure.”
Last summer’s blockbusters, “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” together contributed nearly $1 billion to the domestic box office, a benchmark that 2024 has yet to replicate.
