CETAG Makes Progress in Talks with Government – President, Principals of Colleges

President of Principals of Colleges, Professor Samuel Atintono, has disclosed that the College of Education Teachers Association, CETAG, yesterday made significant progress with the government concerning their strike.

He stated that members are happy with the government’s commitment to engage them, adding that there will be more engagement.

He concluded that details will be made public in the shortest possible time.

“We have had very fruitful engagement, that is significant progress on discussions. I can say we have had a progressive meeting with the Minister himself in attendance and CETAG leadership. We are going to do more engagement, and then we will get to know the details probably by the weekend,”

Government’s side has made some commitments, and CETAG has made some commitments, so we needed to go back and do some consultations but (for me) this meeting in particular was very important.

We all made a strong appeal to them to reconsider their position and we hope that we will hear from them,”

On reasons why colleges were not shut down though teachers were on strike, Professor Atintono said students were asked to take advantage of the situation to engage in the field, a practical aspect of their studies.

He stated ” We did not want the student to go and the next day, they called off the strike. Nonetheless, apart from the teaching, there is also a practical component that the students have to do, while they are the strike, we took advantage for the students to go on the field to have a full experience.”

Also in attendance were representatives from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, PRINCOF, Finance Ministry, and Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTECH).
