Tema Oil Refinery set to resume operations in three months -Herbert Krapa

The Minister of State at the Ministry of Energy, Herbert Krapa, has announced that the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) is scheduled to restart operations within the next three months.

This decision follows a strategic agreement between TOR management and the government, aiming to rejuvenate the facility.

Mr. Krapa shared the news via a Facebook post after his working visit to both the Tema Oil Refinery and the Sentuo Oil Refinery on July 23, 2024. He highlighted the government’s commitment to reviving TOR by securing a strategic partner, with the partnership process nearing completion.

“Earlier today, I paid working visits to Tema Oil Refinery and Sentuo Oil Refinery. I am happy to announce that together with the Management of TOR, we agreed on a three-month timeline for the resumption of the plant,” Mr. Krapa stated.

Additionally, the Minister announced plans to revive TOR’s Testing Laboratory to generate revenue and emphasized the need for collaboration between TOR and Sentuo for mutual growth.

He also called for collective support from all stakeholders to ensure the successful revival of TOR, underscoring the importance of the refinery to the nation’s economy.

TOR, currently managed by Kofi Tagoe Mocumbi, has been non-operational for several years due to a lack of crude oil, the refinery’s primary raw material. Before shutting down, TOR had the capacity to refine approximately 45,000 barrels of crude oil daily. The inactivity of the refinery has raised concerns among stakeholders about its impact on the price of imported fuel.

Mr. Krapa stressed that it is imperative to support and rejuvenate TOR, reflecting on the significance of his visit to the facility.

“There is no gain in saying TOR needs all our support, and attention and we all need to put our hands on deck it is for these reasons that I chose TOR to be my first official visit to the institutions that work under the ministry. I don’t think it’s late in the day,” he concluded.
