Akufo-Addo justifies appointment of additional Judges to address increasing workload

Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has defended the recent appointment of additional judges to the country’s courts, citing the increasing workload on judges as the primary reason for this decision.

This comes amid contrasting views from Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, who has advocated for capping the number of judges.

During the swearing-in ceremony of 16 new Appeals Court judges at the Jubilee House, President Akufo-Addo expressed his support for Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s call for more judges.

He highlighted the necessity of appointing more judges due to the establishment of additional courts across the country.

The President explained that the significant expansion of the Court of Appeal’s personnel, marked by the appointment of these 16 new justices, directly responds to the challenge of an overburdened court system.

He noted that the Chief Justice, with the support of the judicial council, has decided to establish permanent panels of the Court of Appeals in Sekondi, Koforidua, Kumasi, Tamale, and Accra.
