MTN Ghana addresses public outcry over high internet data costs

MTN Ghana has responded to increasing public concerns regarding the high cost of internet data, which has negatively impacted businesses.

MTN Ghana has responded to increasing public concerns regarding the high cost of internet data, which has negatively impacted businesses and led to significant backlash on social media.

The discontent has prompted some to call for the dissolution of the National Communications Authority (NCA) board, blaming it for the high data costs and unreliable service.

During a visit by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Communication, MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer addressed these concerns, pointing to regulatory measures intended to foster competition and serve public interest.

“I believe the NCA has addressed the subject as to why we have some of the data pricing we have. They have also talked about how low our prices are in the sub-region,” he stated. He further elaborated, “The declaration of MTN Ghana as a significant market player means our data prices have to be higher than our competitors. The NCA explained that this data structure aims to improve competition and serves some public interest reasons.”

This explanation underscores the regulatory complexities and competitive strategies influencing MTN Ghana’s pricing policies amidst growing public scrutiny.
