GTEC Orders Withholding of CETAG July Salaries Amid Ongoing Strike
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has instructed the Controller and Accountant General’s Department to withhold the July 2024 salaries of all teaching staff of the Colleges of Education (CETAG), excluding the College Principals.
This measure comes in response to the ongoing strike by CETAG members, which began in June.
The strike was initiated to protest the government’s delay in implementing the arbitral award and negotiated service conditions.
In a letter to the Accountant General’s Department dated Monday, July 22, GTEC indicated that the directive was issued at the behest of the Minister of Education due to CETAG members’ refusal to end what is being termed an illegal strike.
The letter stated that the Accountant General’s Department should stop the salaries of all CETAG teaching staff, except for the College Principals, for July 2024.
It also instructed College Principals not to validate the July 2024 salaries of any teaching staff.
In response, the leadership of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association has vowed to oppose any attempt to freeze their members’ salaries, asserting that their strike is lawful.
CETAG has accused the National Labour Commission of spreading misinformation about their actions and has pledged to escalate their indefinite strike until the arbitral award and negotiated service conditions are implemented.
