EKMA Health Director Urges Public Vigilance as Dengue Fever Spreads

The Municipal Health Director of the EKMA Health Directorate, Mrs. Joyce Bagina is advising the public to protect themselves from getting infected with Dengue Fever.

She said this at a Public Health Emergency Management Committee meeting held yesterday to brief health professionals on the signs, symptoms and prevention of the Dengue Fever outbreak in the country.

“We have held our public health emergency committee meeting to discuss the dengue fever situation in the country and the way forward for EKMA. We have updated ourselves on what, and how it is transmitted, its causes and preventive measures that people can put in place to ensure that it doesn’t get here.

And even if it gets here, we will be able to report ourselves promptly for management.

According to her, even though there are no records of any cases in the Municipality, it is necessary to sensitise and educate on the best ways to prevent it.

Madam Bagina said that currently, there are no vaccines available for Dengue Fever, and no medications exist to treat it, adding that the most important step is to avoid mosquito bites by using insect repellents, wearing long-sleeved shirts as well and eliminating stagnant water.

” It is caused by a mosquito which bits during the daytime, and so when you are going out, use mosquito repellents to exposed parts of the body, wear clothing to cover most of your body like long sleeve shirts, trousers or skirt to protect yourself.

We need to take care of ourselves during the day to prevent ourselves from getting bitten by these mosquitoes,”
