Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, the Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Wiawso, has distanced himself from an apology issued on his behalf by Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh following his expulsion from Parliament by Speaker Alban Bagbin.

The incident arose during a discussion on the nomination of two justices to the Supreme Court by President Akufo-Addo.

Speaker Bagbin suggested that the House should consider the full complement of the Supreme Court when the Appointments Committee presents its report. Dr. Afriyie disagreed, asserting that it was not within Bagbin’s authority to make such remarks. This led to the Speaker ordering Dr. Afriyie’s removal from the chamber, labeling his comments as “rude” and “disrespectful.”

Following this, the Majority Chief Whip apologized to the Speaker on behalf of the caucus. However, Dr. Afriyie, in an interview on Accra-based Citi FM, denied any wrongdoing and clarified that he had not authorized the apology. He insisted that his remarks were neither insulting nor disrespectful and did not warrant an apology.

“He apologized on my behalf? Well, he doesn’t have my permission to do that and this one you can put on record. We’ll take it to everywhere. I haven’t done any wrong, why should I apologize? So far, I haven’t done anything wrong. I haven’t insulted the speaker, I haven’t disrespected him, what happened where’s the disrespect?” Dr. Afriyie stated.
