Bagbin advocates for cap on number of Supreme Court Justices

Bagbin

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, is advocating for legislation to cap the number of Justices on Ghana’s Supreme Court. Currently, the constitution provides for nine judges but does not set an upper limit.

Bagbin’s call follows President Akufo-Addo’s nomination of two new judges, Justice Sophia Rosseta Bernasko Essah and Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong, to replace the retiring Justices Nii Ashie Kotey and Mariama Owusu.

Bagbin stressed the need for a fixed limit on the number of Supreme Court Justices, suggesting that Parliament should decide whether the full complement should be 13, 15, or more.

He urged the House to consider legislative reforms to establish an upper limit, arguing that it is necessary for a country with a population of 33 million people.

The Speaker’s remarks came as he forwarded the President’s nominations to the Appointments Committee for review and feedback.
