Nurses Call for Degree-Level Programs to Meet International Standards
Regional Secretary for the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, Davis Oppong says, calls for diploma and certificate nursing programs to be elevated to degree level is a good call.
According to him, authorities’ action to effect this is long overdue as it will bring some uniformity in the profession.
Mr. Oppong said such a move would help improve the professionalism of the nursing profession.
“Currently, what is going on is majority of the auxillary nurses are doing professional courses, which is degree in nursing and thr Universities have made arrangement that, we do an access program, then you will be enrolled to do a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
So if the government and regulatory body intend to fade off the certificate and diploma nursing, it won’t harm any already existing diploma and certifcate nurse.
It’s in a good call, and this call has been in existence for the past. We are still hoping and pushing that the government will hear our cry,” He said.
Mr. Davis Oppong said the country needs to upgrade its nursing profession, to meet international standards.
He, however, underscored the challenges in the profession.
” The requisite training is not the same, and unlike when you start working, we believe in experience but the kind of knowledge, the degree or diploma holder will have , a certificate won’t have the same knowledg.
The reason we are calling for this, globally its not done, and you know now we are not meeting standard, so Ghana we have to upgrade ourselves so that we can meet global standard,” He added.
