Ministry of Education refutes minority’s claims of GH₵6bn debt in free SHS program

The Ministry of Education has refuted allegations by the Minority in Parliament that the government owes over six billion Ghana Cedis to organizations and individuals involved in the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

The Minority had asserted that the government has failed to pay over GH₵300 million for the procurement of 1.3 million tablets under the “One Student, One Laptop” initiative and owes the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) GH₵224 million.

In response, Kwasi Kwarteng, spokesperson for the Education Ministry, dismissed these claims as baseless.

“The claim of an excess of 6 billion Ghana Cedis owed by the Ministry is not accurate. It would be more helpful if the Minority provided detailed clarifications on where they obtained these figures,” Kwarteng stated.

He emphasized that the Ministry’s records do not reflect such outstanding arrears to vendors, organizations, and individuals associated with the Free SHS program.

Addressing the specific claim regarding the “One Student, One Tablet” initiative, Kwarteng clarified that the distribution and payments are done in phases, with the government paying based on performance at each stage.
