Kenyan police ban protests in Nairobi, citing safety concerns

Kenyan police have imposed a ban on protests in Nairobi’s city center and surrounding areas “until further notice,” citing challenges in ensuring public safety due to the leaderless nature of recent demonstrations.

The decision follows a month of widespread anti-government protests that have resulted in numerous fatalities.

Despite initial grievances over unpopular tax increases being addressed, the protests have expanded to include calls for President William Ruto’s resignation.

Previously planned protests set for Thursday, which were expected to converge at Uhuru Park before marching to State House, have been disrupted by the ban.

Critics argue online that such a ban exceeds police authority, pointing out that Kenyan law grants citizens the right to demonstrate peacefully.

Acting head of police Douglas Kanja justified the decision based on “credible intelligence” indicating planned disruptions by organized criminal groups during ongoing protests.

The statement also noted challenges in maintaining order due to the lack of centralized leadership in previous demonstrations.

Since the protests began on June 18, significant concessions have been made by the government, including the withdrawal of contentious legislation and the dismissal of the entire cabinet.

Despite these moves, calls persist for stronger actions against corruption and police accountability for deaths during protests.

According to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, at least 50 protesters have been killed and 413 injured in the unrest.
