Concerned drivers association announces 15% transport fare increase

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has declared a 15 percent increase in transport fares, set to take effect on Monday, July 22.

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has declared a 15 percent increase in transport fares, set to take effect on Monday, July 22, 2024.

This decision comes in response to the escalating cost of fuel, with some oil marketing companies now charging over GH₵15 per liter.

David Agboado, the Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, highlighted the rising prices of essential items like spare parts, which are crucial for vehicle maintenance, as another factor driving the fare hike.

“We will be increasing transport fares by 15% on Monday. The reason is that fuel prices have gone high, spare parts have also gone high. All that we use in servicing our vehicles has gone high. That necessitated the 15% increment,” Agboado explained in an interview with Arafat Musah on Beach FM’s Western Echo on Thursday.

“People say we are insensitive to the plight of Ghanaians but if you go to the markets you will see that the cost of tomatoes has gone up drastically. But are people not saying they are insensitive. We are suffering.”

He added that the Transport Ministry was not consulted in this decision, emphasizing the association’s autonomy in adjusting fares.

“Transport Ministry is not aware and we don’t need to sit with the Transport Ministry before we increase our transport fares. We will only reconsider our increment if they can do something about the fuel,” David Agboado stated.
