MPs Push for Special Road Privileges Sparks Debate and Safety Concerns
Some Members of Parliament are hailing the proposed amendment to the road traffic regulations, allowing MPs to use sirens and exempt them from speed limits while carrying out official duties.
The MPs believe the proposed amendment will enhance members’ productivity while ensuring timely arrival at Parliament, considering the heavy traffic.
They stress that the exemption will only be necessary for only congested periods and clarify, that it is not about privilege but efficiently executing their constitutional duties.
Meanwhile, the minority caucus has issued a statement demanding the withdrawal of the proposed amendment to the road traffic regulations.
However, a road safety expert, Godfred Dankwa believes this development will increase road carnage, and should be abolished.
