Domelevo urges support for Kissi Agyebeng in anti-corruption efforts

Fmr Auditor-Gen. Daniel Domelevo has called on Ghanaians, including journalists, to support Mr Agyebeng in his efforts to combat corruption.

Former Auditor-General Daniel Yao Domelevo has called on Ghanaians, including journalists, to support Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng in his efforts to combat corruption.

In an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Accra-based Channel One TV, Domelevo praised Agyebeng’s dedication to the anti-corruption fight, describing his work as “fantastic” and deserving of encouragement.

Mr Domelevo highlighted that Kissi Agyebeng appears to be the sole figure tackling corruption head-on despite facing numerous challenges. He emphasized the importance of backing Mr Agyebeng, noting the various obstacles and institutional arrangements that seem designed to undermine his efforts.

“I wasn’t initially enthusiastic about the creation of the Office of the Special Prosecutor, thinking existing institutions could be mandated to do the job. But if this office is what it takes to fight corruption, I support it. When Martin Amidu was in office, I embraced him and we worked together. He faced many frustrations and eventually resigned.

“Now we have Kissi Agyebeng, who is doing an excellent job. Instead of supporting him, we see attempts to undermine his efforts. There have been petitions against him, retractions, and dismissals of these petitions by the Chief Justice. If Agyebeng is constantly fighting to keep his job, how effective can he be? Yet, he continues to perform well, and we need to encourage him. He seems to be the only one seriously addressing corruption these days and needs all our support, including from journalists.”

Daniel Domelevo also called on all Ghanaians to join the fight against corruption, warning against the normalization of corrupt practices.

“We see state properties being distributed like wedding cakes. If we don’t stand against this, it will become accepted in society, which will be our downfall. We all have to fight.”
