TUTAG calls for the complete dissolution of SSNIT board over hotel sale controversy

The Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG) is demanding the complete dissolution of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) Board to allow more competent individuals to manage their pensions.

This call follows SSNIT’s termination of its intended sale of 60 percent of its shares in four hotels to Rock City Hotel, owned by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.

The decision to halt the sale came after Organised Labour threatened to embark on a nationwide strike on Monday, July 15.

In a statement signed by TUTAG’s National President, Prof. Uriah S. Tetteh, the association stated that discontinuing the sale is insufficient.

They believe that in order to move forward in the right direction, the SSNIT Board must be completely dissolved to make way for more competent individuals who are committed to managing the pensions, with labour unions constituting the majority.

TUTAG is also demanding an explanation from the Board and Management of the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) regarding their sudden reversal on halting the sale process.

They questioned how the NPRA initially disapproved and then approved the sale within a two-week period after halting the process.

Expressing solidarity with Organised Labour’s strike against SSNIT, TUTAG announced that it will initiate the process of taking appropriate actions on the matter, which will be communicated to the public in due course.

The association stated that, in accordance with the procedures outlined in their Constitution and the Labour Act, Act 651 (2003), they will begin the processes of taking appropriate actions on the matter.
