In a notable display of environmental stewardship, the Rotaract Club of UMaT (University of Mines and Technology) Essikado campus recently organized a tree-planting exercise, emphasizing their commitment to sustainability and the reduction of carbon footprints.
The event, held on campus, saw the successful planting of 80 seedlings, procured from the university’s nursery.
Speaking to Beach FM, Adamu Abdul-Aziz, Secretary of the Rotaract club of UMaT Essikado-campus expressed gratitude to the Club’s members and supporters. “We are grateful for your support. This event reflects our dedication to environmental conservation and sustainability. By planting these seedlings, we aim to reduce carbon footprints on our campus. Our Rotaractors will be closely monitoring the growth of these plants to ensure their successful development. We hope this initiative raises awareness about environmental conservation and inspires others to take action towards a greener campus.”
The club also made a call to action, inviting individuals and organizations to partner with and sponsor future projects. One of such projects include the renovation of a 70-seater summer hut, a popular spot that accommodates many students on campus.
Adamu Abdul-Aziz added, “we are calling on individuals and organizations to partner with us and sponsor our future projects. This includes renovating a 70-seater capacity summer hut which provides shelter and a gathering place for numerous students on campus.”
The event garnered praise from Professor Issaka Yakubu, Dean of the university. He lauded the initiative and the club’s efforts, highlighting the importance of instilling a sense of service in the younger generation.
“This is a commendable effort by the Rotaract Club. When we inculcate the spirit of service in the younger generation, it has a profoundly positive impact on our societies. Rotary’s vision is indeed positive, and we all must support it. I am delighted by the club’s initiative. Make sure you expand your membership because you are doing great work,” Professor Yakubu remarked.
The tree-planting event not only contributed to the campus’s greenery but also served as an educational platform, encouraging students and staff to actively participate in environmental conservation efforts. The Rotaract Club’s proactive approach demonstrates the significant role that youth organizations can play in promoting sustainability and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.
