The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has projected that Ghana’s population will surpass 50 million by 2050, a significant rise from 30.8 million recorded in 2021.

According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census Thematic Report on Population Projections, the population is expected to grow by 1.7 times its 2021 size.

The report indicates that the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions will continue to be the most populous, with each expected to house approximately 7.5 million people by 2050.

Meanwhile, the Northern, Northeast, and Savannah regions are anticipated to see the highest growth rates, with their populations projected to double by 2050.

Significant demographic shifts are expected, including a decline in the youth population and an increase in the elderly population.

Urban areas are also predicted to experience substantial growth, with over half of the regions expected to be urban by 2030.

The report states that by 2030, Ghana’s population is expected to reach 37.2 million, with an average annual increase of 711,706 people.

Additionally, the proportion of the population residing in urban areas is projected to rise from 56.7% in 2021 to 60.7% by 2030. By 2030, more than half of Ghana’s 16 regions are expected to be urban, while seven regions—Volta, Oti, Western North, North East, Upper West, Savannah, and Upper East—will remain predominantly rural.
