A 42-year-old farmer, Anas Ibrahim, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison by the Dambai Circuit Court for inflicting cutlass wounds on his pregnant wife in Banda, Krachi Nchumuru District, Oti Region.

Presiding Judge Osman Abdul-Hakeem handed down the sentence after Ibrahim pleaded guilty to assault, inflicting multiple cutlass wounds, and attempted murder.

He received five years for assault, seven years for inflicting wounds, and ten years for attempted murder, with the sentences to run consecutively.

Prosecutor Detective Chief Inspector S. K. Gavor informed the court that Ibrahim attacked his wife without provocation on May 28, 2024, on a farm in Banda. Ibrahim reportedly attempted to enter his wife’s house around 1:00 am but failed.

The next morning, he ambushed her and inflicted multiple cutlass wounds. The victim was initially treated at Banda Health Centre and later referred to Kpandai Polyclinic. She has since been discharged.

In his defense, Ibrahim claimed he was provoked when his wife hit him on the head with a stick, causing him to retaliate.
