Atta Akyea criticizes Vice Chair over IGP removal probe report
Samuel Atta Akyea, Chairman of the special committee probing the leaked tape regarding plans to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has sharply criticized the committee’s Vice Chairman, James Agalga, over his comments on the legality of demanding the IGP’s call logs as evidence.
Atta Akyea attributed the committee’s shortcomings to Agalga’s lack of constitutional understanding.
Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, Atta Akyea emphasized that the committee has the powers, rights, and privileges of High Court, questioning why it couldn’t commandeer law, and suggesting that Agalga’s misunderstanding of the Constitution led to the committee’s errors.
He further described the committee’s report as anaemic and lacking the necessary substance for parliamentary action.
The unsigned report indicated that senior police officers COP Alex George Mensah, Superintendent George Lysander Asare, and Superintendent Emmanuel Eric Gyebi had misconducted themselves, a major offence under Police regulations, warranting disciplinary action.
During the parliamentary debate, Atta Akyea urged the house to reject the committee’s report, citing its lack of logical foundation.
He criticized the report for reducing parliament and the committee to a conveyor belt, stating that committees are supposed to delve into matters rather than just accept information presented to them.
He argued that the report is too anaemic to serve as a basis for any parliamentary decision and called for its rejection due to the lack of evidence supporting its conclusions.
