Minority in Parliament plans second protest to demand removal of BoG governor
The Minority caucus in Parliament is planning a second protest to demand the removal of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, and his two deputies.
According to some news sources within the caucus, it is essential to replace the governor, who is accused of overseeing significant mismanagement at the Central Bank, with a more competent individual.
The caucus previously staged a protest on October 3, 2023, calling for the resignation of the governor of BoG and deputies after the Bank reported a GH¢60.81 billion loss in the 2022 fiscal year and allocated over $250 million for constructing a new headquarters.
The protest began at the Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle and proceeded through Adabraka, Ridge Roundabout, National Theatre Traffic Light, High Court Complex Traffic Light, and Attah Mills Highway before making a U-turn at the National Lottery Authority and concluding at Independence Square. The protest ended with the leadership presenting a petition to the governor, who sent his head of security instead of meeting them in person.
Following the unsuccessful protest, the caucus began planning a new protest, a process that has taken nearly a year. Bawku Central Member of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, filed a Right to Information Act (RTI) request seeking details on the combined losses of approximately GHS 70 billion reported in the BoG’s financial statements for 2022 and 2023. He also requested information on the over GH¢250 million spent on the BoG’s new head office and a clinic under construction.
The news sources indicate that Mahama Ayariga will lead the upcoming protest after obtaining the necessary authorization and clearance from the police.
