Ghanaians emigrating for opportunities, not due to government dissatisfaction – Dr Gideon Boako
Dr. Gideon Boako, spokesperson for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has refuted claims that a loss of faith in the government is driving Ghanaians to leave the country, labeling such assertions as “dishonest.”
Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM on Thursday, Dr. Boako addressed the growing perception that many citizens are emigrating due to dissatisfaction with the current administration.
He argued that these claims are baseless and misleading, failing to accurately represent the situation in Ghana and undermining the government’s efforts. Dr. Boako emphasized the importance of recognizing positive aspects, such as the rise in cross-border trade.
In response to the notion that unprecedented hopelessness or hardship is causing people to travel, Dr. Gideon Boako stated, “it will be the highest level of dishonesty if anybody says that. People travel for different reasons. Some are going to school; some are going to do business. Ten years ago, how many Ghanaians used to travel to Dubai? Today, multiples of people go to Dubai. What do they go there to do? They go for holidays, shopping, trade, and then come back.”
He added, “you cannot say that seeing people traveling in large numbers is an indication of hopelessness. You should look at it positively because today, cross-border trade is more prevalent than in the past. So, saying that increased travel signifies hopelessness is not only dishonest but also reflects a lack of proper understanding. I don’t buy into that.”
