NSS personnel announce nationwide strike due to unpaid allowances

The Concerned National Service Scheme (NSS) Personnel Association of Ghana (CONSPAG) has initiated a nationwide strike starting today, July 3, 2024, due to unpaid allowances.

In a statement dated July 2, 2024, addressed to all NSS personnel, user agencies, and stakeholders, CONSPAG outlined the severe challenges leading to the strike.

The personnel cited the inability to pay for accommodation, utilities, transportation, and basic sustenance due to the non-payment of allowances, forcing many to borrow money to survive.

The association highlighted health complications arising from these hardships, noting that the government owes trainees five months’ allowances and university graduates three months’ allowances.

Despite NSS rules and regulations stipulating sanctions for personnel who fail to report for three months after posting, CONSPAG pointed out that their members have been working under difficult conditions without allowances for extended periods.

The association described the situation as akin to slavery, stating that the workforce feels undermined and their service to the nation unrecognized.

CONSPAG emphasized that National Service Personnel are crucial to the success of both public and private institutions in Ghana, and their contributions must be acknowledged.

The association called on all public and private stakeholders, including media houses, political leaders, and traditional rulers, to advocate for the timely payment of allowances and support the personnel in their plight.
