Tyla shines at BET awards: Wins best new artist and best international act
South African singer Tyla had a remarkable night at this year’s BET Awards, winning both Best New Artist and Best International Act.
In her acceptance speech for Best New Artist, she expressed gratitude, dedicating the awards “to Africa” and all the African stars who paved the way before her, adorned in a sleek black dress.
Her performance of “Jump” alongside Gunna and Skillibeng was electrifying, featuring dancers in tiger print bodysuits, a tribute to her fanbase known as Tygers.
The stage also showcased a large elephant statue and stilt performers, adding to the spectacle.
The BET Awards, established in 2001 by Black Entertainment Television, celebrate and honor black and underrepresented individuals in entertainment.
This year’s event took place at the Peacock Theatre in California.
Another South African winner was Makhadzi, who won the Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act.
She expressed her joy, reflecting on her journey from the streets to international recognition, calling it the “best birthday ever” and stunning on the red carpet in a vibrant pink ensemble.
South Africa’s newly appointed Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, praised both Tyla and Makhadzi, promising to support and discover more talent like them in the future.
Fashion was also a highlight, with South African rapper Focalistic looking sharp in a red suit, and Senegalese-American singer Akon also rocking a vibrant color scheme.
Nigerian singer Tems won the Best Gospel/Inspirational Award for her song “Me & U,” though she couldn’t attend as she was performing at the UK’s Glastonbury festival.
She was also nominated for Video Director of the Year but did not win.
Ayra Starr and Asake were among the nominees for Best International Act but lost to Tyla.
