Six arrested for burning 60-year-old man to death in Ahanta West
The Ahanta West Municipal Police Command has arrested six individuals in connection with the brutal killing of 60-year-old Isaac Ansah in Achonwa, Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region.
The tragic event occurred on Thursday, June 27th, 2024, following a mob action spurred by accusations from a local fetish priest. The priest had reported to the town elders that Ansah had submitted the names of 14 community members for him to kill.
Mr Ansah had been serving over two years of banishment from the community due to a previous allegation of causing a resident’s death through spiritual means.
Frank Eshun, nephew to the late Ansah, narrated the incident to Accra-based Channel One News, revealing that the arrested individuals include the Caretaker Chief, Nana Ojandi, Assemblyman Godfred Cudjoe, the fetish priest, the Chief Fisherman, and two others.
According to Eshun, the mob action that led to his uncle’s death occurred shortly after an inconclusive meeting between Ansah and the town elders. The meeting, held by the Caretaker Chief and Assemblyman, was meant to decide Ansah’s fate based on the fetish priest’s accusations.
Eshun explained that his uncle had approached the fetish priest with the names in an attempt to soften the hearts of the community elders and facilitate his return. However, the priest misrepresented his intentions, leading the youth to capture, tie, stone, and ultimately burn Ansah using car tires and petrol.
The family is devastated by Ansah’s violent death and is demanding justice. Eshun expressed his grief, recounting the harrowing sight of his uncle’s remains being scavenged by animals. He emphasized the need for legal action against those responsible, stressing the importance of upholding the law.
The remains of Isaac Ansah have been sent to the mortuary for autopsy, and the family hopes to give him a peaceful burial once they receive the body.
