K.T. Hammond rebukes cement chamber CEO over petition against pricing regulation

K.T. Hammond has criticized the Chamber of Cement Manufacturers, for a petition opposing a L.I. intended to regulate cement pricing in Ghana.

Trade and Industry Minister Kobina Tahir Hammond has criticized Dr. George Dawson-Ahmoah, CEO of the Chamber of Cement Manufacturers, for a petition to Parliament opposing a proposed Legislative Instrument (L.I.) intended to regulate cement pricing in Ghana.

The Chamber has expressed serious concerns about the proposed L.I., arguing it undermines fairness and transparency, and fails to address the root causes of rising cement prices.

Addressing journalists, K.T. Hammond affirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring fair cement prices for Ghanaians.

“I believe there is something fundamentally wrong with cement pricing in this country. Similar issues were tackled when I was at the Ministry of Energy. There must be some order in the system,” he said.

KT Hammond criticized Dr. Dawson-Ahmoah’s petition, describing it as insulting.

“Dr. George Dawson-Ahmoah, who has been a longtime friend and consultant in the industry, is now telling Parliament to order me to retract my proposal because he was not consulted. He should understand that by Article 11 of the constitution, Parliament does not direct me to consult with him,” Hammond stated.

He urged cement manufacturers to ensure reasonable pricing.

“I will encourage my colleagues to bring sanity to cement pricing. It’s high time someone took control and set things right,” Hammond concluded.
