Ministry of Works and Housing awaits bids for Saglemi Housing project redevelopment
The Ministry of Works and Housing is set to receive bids from private sector entities interested in redeveloping the long-stalled Saglemi Housing Project.
This crucial step marks a new chapter in the effort to complete this significant housing initiative as the deadline for proposal submissions approaches.
With ten potential developers expressing interest following thorough site explorations, the Ministry anticipates the formal submission of bids from these entities.
During a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, provided an update on the Request for Proposals (RFP) issued earlier this year.
He announced that about ten companies, both international and local, have shown interest, collected forms, visited the project site, and inspected the existing work.
The Saglemi Housing Project, initially planned to deliver 5,000 affordable housing units, was scaled back to 1,506 units before being halted due to legal issues. The partially built structures have since suffered from vandalism and theft, further complicating efforts to complete the project.
However, the current administration is determined to leverage private sector expertise and resources to see the project through to completion.
Minister Oppong Nkrumah emphasized the government’s commitment to transparency and fairness in the selection process. He explained that the Ministry expects to receive all bids by July 8, 2024.
The bids will be handed over to an independent evaluation entity for assessment, and based on this evaluation, the government will proceed to select one of the bidders.
This approach aims to ensure that the best-suited developer is chosen based on merit and quality, addressing the long-standing issue of incomplete public housing projects in Ghana.
The coming weeks will be crucial as the Ministry receives and hands over the bids for evaluation. The selected developer will be tasked with revitalizing the Saglemi project, ultimately delivering much-needed housing for Ghanaians.
