Four mourners killed at Malawi vice-president’s funeral as vehicle tries to avoid convoy

Witnesses recount a tragic incident during the funeral procession of Malawi’s late Vice-President Saulos Chilima, where four people, including a pregnant woman, lost their lives after a vehicle tried to avoid the convoy carrying Mr. Chilima’s body and struck mourners.

Twelve others sustained injuries and were hospitalized.

The incident occurred amidst clashes involving local residents, police, and soldiers escorting the funeral convoy from Lilongwe to Mr. Chilima’s home village for burial.

Mr. Chilima, who died in a plane crash a week prior, was laid to rest in Ntcheu, approximately 180 km south of Lilongwe.

During the burial, tensions rose as some mourners expressed criticism towards President Lazarus Chakwera.

The accident occurred as thousands lined the streets to witness the procession.

In the chaos, a privately owned vehicle veered off the road while trying to avoid the convoy, resulting in the tragic deaths and injuries.

The spokesperson for Mr. Chilima’s UTM party noted some unrest along the route as mourners demanded a stop to view the coffin.

The party condemned the violence, urging supporters to maintain peace in honor of Mr. Chilima’s advocacy for tranquility.

Mr. Chilima, known for his connection with the people and considered a positive force in Malawian politics, died in a military aircraft crash along with eight others.

His death sparked emotional tributes and reflections on his impact on Malawi’s political landscape.

While Mr. Chilima’s supporters have voiced criticisms regarding the handling of events leading to his death, President Chakwera has pledged a thorough investigation into the crash.
