Health Minister Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye has clarified that the proposed mandatory health insurance policy for non-resident visitors is not yet an official government policy but a suggestion from the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) awaiting cabinet approval.

Recent reports indicated that starting July 1, 2024, foreign nationals arriving in Ghana would need to purchase a compulsory health insurance policy ranging from $45 to $270.

However, in a press release dated June 18, 2024, Dr. Okoe Boye clarified that the “recent announcement regarding mandatory health insurance policy for non-resident visitors is a proposal from the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and not a policy of government.”

“While the proposal aims to ensure that foreign nationals have access to healthcare during their stay in Ghana, it is important to note that it has not yet been discussed or approved by Cabinet,” the Health Minister stated.

The ministry urged the public to disregard any misinformation suggesting that the policy has been finalized. Dr. Okoe Boye assured that any policy and its implementation would be thoroughly scrutinized and go through all necessary protocols to ensure its benefits for the people of Ghana before being adopted.
