In a new book release, Professor Godwin Etse Sikanku, a distinguished Communications and Journalism lecturer, delves into the leadership principles and emerging values embodied by Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The book, titled ‘DR BAWUMIA AND THE MODERN VICE PRESIDENCY IN GHANA‘, highlights how Bawumia’s tenure transcends traditional politics, offering a wealth of inspiration for youth, governance, leadership, and communication.
In an interview with Paul Adom Otchere, Professor Sikanku elaborated on the motivations behind his book. He noted that Dr Bawumia’s life and career offer valuable lessons not just for politicians, but for corporate leaders and anyone in a position of assisting or deputizing.
“Dr. Bawumia’s loyalty to the President, his hard work, and dependability are qualities that corporate leaders, deputies, and assistants can all learn from,” Prof Godwin Sikanku stated.
The book analyzes how Dr Bawumia has redefined the Vice Presidency in Ghana, evolving the office from a largely ceremonial role into a dynamic force for change. Prof Godwin Sikanku argues that Bawumia exemplifies what a modern Afrocentric Vice President should be, fulfilling the role as an instrument for social justice, social progress, and social cohesion.
“This is an office that can be the single most transformative executive framework for the transformation of the country in terms of it being an instrument for social justice, for social progress and social cohesion. And if you look at all these three indicators, this is a Vice President who has really fulfilled all these three indicators on what a Modern Afrocentric Vice President should be”, he noted.

Highlighting Bawumia’s empathy, humility, hard work, and excellence, the book paints a picture of a leader dedicated to progress and innovation. Particularly notable is Bawumia’s forward-thinking approach to digitalization, which Prof Sikanku describes as transformative for Ghana’s governance.
The book is structured into several insightful chapters, each focusing on different aspects of Bawumia’s impact and leadership style. These chapters include “The Bawumia Factor,” which explores his influence and significance in Ghanaian politics; “H.E. Samira Bawumia,” which highlights the role of the Vice President’s wife; and “The Supreme Court Petition: a Star Witness Illuminate the Nation,” which discusses Bawumia’s pivotal role in legal proceedings that shaped national discourse.
Other chapters such as “The Modern Afrocentric Vice President,” “The Bawumia Way and Lessons,” and “Mr. Digitalization” delve deeper into his philosophy, achievements, and the digital transformation initiatives he has spearheaded.
