Bawumia: “Let’s prioritize ideas, not religion or ethnicity, in 2024 elections”
Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called for the upcoming polls to be centered on solution-oriented ideas and policies rather than divisions based on religion or ethnicity.
Speaking at the Eid-Ul-Adha celebration at the State House forecourt, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of maintaining the country’s religious harmony.
“Ghana is a blessed country. We are the most peaceful country in West Africa and probably about the fifth or so most peaceful country in Africa,” he stated, attributing this peace to Ghana’s religious tolerance. He urged that the focus of the 2024 elections be on ideas and solutions, highlighting the harmonious coexistence of Christians and Muslims in Ghana.
“We are one people, we are one nation, and we should let this election be about the policies, ideas, and solutions that the respective candidate has for the country,” he added.
In a speech delivered on his behalf, the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, urged election stakeholders to adhere to electoral laws. He called on political parties to exercise restraint, avoid hate speech, shun violence, and remain vigilant during the elections.
The Chief Imam also urged the Electoral Commission to ensure credible and peaceful elections through impartiality, transparency, fairness, and proficiency.
“He calls on them to also conduct exhaustive consultation to ensure trust and reduce suspicion, and calls on the Ghana Police Service to maintain a high standard of professionalism, fairness, and impartiality,” the statement concluded.
