FWSC directs CETAG to immediately cease industrial action

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has issued a directive to the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) to immediately halt its ongoing industrial action.

In a statement, the Commission criticized CETAG’s decision to initiate a strike at this critical juncture, despite ongoing government efforts to resolve their grievances.

CETAG commenced an indefinite strike on Friday, June 14, 2024, citing delays by the government in implementing the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) Arbitral Award Orders and negotiating service conditions.

Addressing the media in Accra, FWSC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Benjamin Arthur emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the concerns of teachers in colleges of Education.

“Government has demonstrated goodwill towards this because we believe that it is mutually beneficial, and it will benefit this country that at least we do something for our colleagues who are teaching in the colleges of Education. The government means well,” he stated.

Arthur urged CETAG members to return to their classrooms promptly, labeling the strike as an act of bad faith.

Meanwhile, Professor Samuel Atintono, President of the Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education, expressed disappointment over CETAG’s decision to strike.

He described the strike as unnecessary, emphasizing its disruption to the normal academic flow for students.

The FWSC’s directive underscores ongoing efforts to restore normalcy in educational institutions affected by the industrial action.
