ECG declares ‘dumsor’ timetable unnecessary

The Deputy Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ing. Kwadwo Obeng, has dismissed calls for a load shedding timetable despite a planned three-week power outage due to a gas supply shortage from Nigeria.

This announcement by ECG and GRIDCo on Thursday, June 13, has led some business owners to urge the ECG to release a load shedding timetable to help them plan for the outage.

In an interview with Citi News, barbers and tailors expressed the need for a timetable to manage their operations. One barber mentioned the significant impact the power outage would have on businesses, highlighting the lack of alternatives like generators to continue working during outages.

However, speaking at a public forum on addressing power sector challenges, Ing. Kwadwo Obeng explained that creating a scheduled timetable might not be feasible due to the unpredictability of other faults and maintenance works.

He emphasized that without knowing the exact amount of power that needs to be shed and its duration, it is challenging to prepare an accurate schedule. He noted that multiple factors, including peak and off-peak periods, must be considered.

Ing. Obeng also mentioned that ECG is collaborating with local manufacturers and companies with plants in Ghana to manage the power situation more effectively.

However, without precise information on the power shortfall, creating a reliable load shedding timetable remains difficult.
