The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has announced its plans to host presidential and vice-presidential debates in October 2024.

Despite previous criticism from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding a lack of engagement, the IEA has initiated discussions with various political parties to ensure their participation.

Justice Sophia Akuffo, a distinguished fellow of the IEA, emphasized the importance of the debates in providing voters with a clearer understanding of each candidate’s policies and offering a platform for candidate evaluation.

She stated that the IEA plans to hold the encounters in September and the debates in October and November, with precise dates, times, and venues to be announced after further engagements with candidates and their parties. Akuffo also urged the public to stay updated via the IEA website.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has repeatedly called on NDC’s John Dramani Mahama for a debate on the economy and other national issues.

The NDC has rejected these calls, claiming that the NPP’s flagbearer seeks to revive his faltering political career.
