“Play is Essential!” Social Worker Champions Play for Children on International Day of Play
Lilian Idrrisu, a social welfare officer at the Western Regional Office, has emphasized the importance of including play in the socio-physical activity of children.
The International Day of Play marks a significant milestone in efforts to preserve, promote, and prioritise so that all people, especially children, can reap the rewards and thrive to their full potential.
According to Madam Idrrisu, inculcating play in children’s activities fosters creativity and innovation in individuals, especially children.
Additionally, she emphasised that restricting children’s play can limit their opportunities, which can impede a child’s well-being and development.
In educational settings, play-based learning has been recognised as an effective approach to engaging students actively in the learning process.
She mentioned that this makes learning more enjoyable and relevant, enhancing motivation and retention of information.
In an interview on Spice FM with Ampem Darko host of Adzekyee Mu Nsem, Madam Lilian Iddrisu said the day is to create a unifying moment at global, national, and local levels to elevate the importance of play.
For children in particular, play helps build relationships, improves control, and overcomes trauma, and problem-solving.
This also helps children develop the cognitive, physical, creative, social and emotional skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
International Day of Play is observed on 11 June annually.
