Fishermen protest for release of chief fisherman in Sekondi Takoradi
Hundreds of irate fishermen and residents of Sekondi Takoradi have converged at the Sekondi Police Station, demanding the immediate release of their chief fisherman, who is currently in custody.
The protesters, many of whom were singing war songs, have vowed to remain at the station until their leader, Nana Panyin Yena, is released.
The chief fisherman was arrested and charged in connection with the lynching of a suspected thief at Betumagyebu in Sekondi about a year ago.
Nana Panyin Yena, along with two others, had been granted bail by the Sekondi District Court.
However, the fishermen, represented by Nana Botwe, insist they have met all the court’s bail conditions and refuse to allow their leader to spend another night in police custody.
The protesters are calling on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to intervene to prevent the situation from escalating.
Attempts to obtain a response from the police have been unsuccessful.
