Soldier brutally beaten by illegal miners at Wassa Akyempim
A military officer stationed at the Tarkwa-Aboso military quarters in the Tarkwa Nsueam Municipality of the Western region has been beaten to a pulp by illegal miners at Wassa Akyempim in the Wassa East district of the Western region.
Reports suggest that the officer, Timothy Adzakosi, and three other colleagues visited the galamsey, but his colleagues managed to escape from the illegal miners.
Narrating the incident to newsmen, some residents said all they saw was that the military officer was wildly being chased by illegal miners from the galamsey site.
“They chased him to a fuel station at Wassa Akyempim, where the victim finally got tired and could not run further. They got hold of him and butchered him in the head and other parts of his body,” a resident said.
Residents further added that the military officers regularly visit various galamsey sites in the Wassa East district; however, the reasons for their visit are unknown.
It took the intervention of the assemblyman of the Wassa Akyempim electoral area, Hon. Joseph Akomiah, and his unit community chairman to prevent a further assault on Timothy, who was rushed to the Wassa Ateiku Health Center for treatment.
The Wassa East district police command has not rested on the matter, commencing investigations into the matter to locate the perpetrators who are currently on the run and put them before the law.
The incident in the region comes after the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the Amenfi East Constituency, Ernest Frimpong, was heard in a viral video urging illegal miners to resist any attempts by the military or any security officer to stop them from doing their work.
Mr. Frimpong said, “We have cancelled Operation Galamstop and the soldiers who have been tormenting you. So, officially, they don’t have any mandate to do that again,” the PC stated.
