Fmr 2nd Lady Matilda Amissah-Arthur recounts harrowing robbery and near-death experience
Matilda Amissah-Arthur, the widow of the late former Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, has shared a terrifying account of how she was robbed and nearly killed in her own bedroom on Tuesday, December 5, 2023.
Mrs. Amissah-Arthur recounted that an intruder, dressed in black, broke into her room, demanding money and threatening her life, as well as the lives of anyone who might come to her aid. Despite handing over $2,200 and 50 euros, the robber was dissatisfied and ransacked her room in search of more valuables.
In a video testimony, Mrs. Amissah-Arthur described how the attacker threatened to kill her and anyone who intervened, which led her to comply with his demands. In a surprising turn, when she requested water during the ordeal, the intruder fetched it from her fridge, only to resume strangling her after she took a sip.
“I thought I was dreaming. I rubbed my face to make sure I wasn’t. He told me, ‘If you shout and someone comes, I’ll kill them and you,’” she recounted. “We were renovating our mother’s house, and my siblings had brought money, which was with me. I quickly gave him the $2,200 and 50 euros I had.”
The intruder, unhappy with the amount, became enraged, turning her room upside down in search of more money or jewelry. “He said, ‘You wasted my time, so I will kill you. But I have to call my boss.’ He dragged me from the bed, hitting my head on the ground,” she continued.
After a brief phone call, the intruder declared that his boss had ordered him to shoot her, but he decided instead to strangle her for a slower death. “I got thirsty at some point and said, ‘I am thirsty.’ He stopped strangling me, fetched water from my fridge, and let me drink before snapping it away and continuing to strangle me,” Mrs. Amissah-Arthur recounted.
This harrowing experience has left Mrs. Amissah-Arthur shaken but grateful to be alive.
