Gomoa Adwawukwa: Ayensu river diversion by contractor submerges over 150 houses, displacing about 2000 people
The diversion of the Ayensu River by a contractor working on the Kasoa-Cape Coast Highway has led to severe destruction, submerging over 150 houses and farmlands, and causing three houses to collapse.
The damage began on Wednesday, June 5, affecting a bridge spanning the Ayensu River, which flows from the Eastern Region across the Accra-Cape Coast Highway at Gomoa Okyereko in the Central Region before emptying into the sea.
By Thursday morning, June 6, the destruction had caused a portion of the main Accra-Cape Coast Highway to collapse, leaving commuters stranded.
Robert Hackman, the Gomoa East District Director for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NaDMO), detailed the extent of the destruction to Accra-based Citi News and advised motorists to use alternative routes while waiting for the damaged road to be restored.
“Currently, three houses have collapsed and almost 150 houses have been submerged. This morning, we came around 3 am hoping that the water would recede, but part of the bridge has collapsed totally. We are appealing to motorists coming from Cape Coast to use the Winneba Junction route and appear at Akotsi Junction. Motorists should not use the Potsin-Okyereko stretch”, Mr Hackman stated.
