EC reinstates political party agents to observe vote transfer amid criticism

The Electoral Commission (EC) has reversed its directive barring political party agents from observing the vote transfer exercise.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has reversed its directive barring political party agents from observing the vote transfer exercise.

The initial ban, announced in a memo to district officers on Sunday, June 2, cited violent clashes at some transfer centers as the reason for the restriction.

The directive faced widespread criticism from political parties and civil society organizations, who argued that it undermined the democratic process and could lead to vote transfer irregularities.

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), suggested in a Facebook post that the EC’s decision indicated potential collusion with the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to manipulate the upcoming December 7 general elections.

However, during a press conference on Tuesday, June 4, Deputy Commissioner in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, announced that the EC had reversed the decision after extensive deliberations.
