Election 2024: Hawa Koomson’s son, three others injured in violent clash at Kasoa EC office
Violence erupted at the Electoral Commission’s office in Kasoa, resulting in injuries to four individuals. One of the injured, Ato Koomson, son of incumbent MP Mavis Hawa Koomson, sustained severe chest injuries and has been transferred to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.
The clash, which occurred around 5 am, involved members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). According to eyewitnesses, the altercation began over a disagreement about the queuing of voters seeking to transfer their votes to the constituency.
In the course of the violence, three NDC members were also injured and admitted to the Kasoa Polyclinic. Mike Addy, the NPP constituency secretary for Awutu Senya East, stated that the situation escalated when Ato Koomson attempted to maintain peace but was attacked by an NDC member, who has since been arrested.
The NDC Communication Bureau in Awutu Senya East condemned the incident, accusing the NPP of aggression and lawlessness. The statement from NDC Communications Officer Delali Seworkpor further accused Ato Koomson of instigating the violence.
The police have arrested two individuals, including NDC constituency organizer Daniel Techie Mensah, in connection with the incident. The NDC expressed concerns over the police’s impartiality, questioning the selective nature of the arrests.
