Flooding and landslides triggered by monsoon rains in Sri Lanka have resulted in the deaths of at least seven people, according to the country’s Disaster Management Centre (DMC).

In Sitawaka, near the capital Colombo, three family members lost their lives when their home was inundated.

Electricity has been cut off in several areas, and schools have been ordered to remain closed on Monday. Landslide warnings have been issued in nine districts.

DMC Director Pradeep Kodippili informed the media that the risk of flooding is rapidly escalating in Colombo and other southern regions.

“Many areas have reportedly received more than 400mm of rain so far,” Kodippili stated. “The minor flood risk is increasing to a major flood risk.”

He urged residents to heed emergency announcements from the government and DMC.

The DMC reported that 20 of the country’s 25 districts have been impacted by the rains. The military has been mobilized to assist those affected.

Air Force spokesperson Capt. Dushan Wijesinghe told the media that three helicopters and rescue teams had been deployed for relief efforts.

Navy spokesperson Capt. Gayan Wickramasuriya added that 10 Navy teams are on the ground, with an additional 116 teams ready to be deployed.

The army is providing food to displaced individuals. Sulakshana Jayawardena of the Ministry of Electricity and Energy explained to the media that electricity supplies had been disconnected in some regions.

“We have suspended power supplies in these areas in coordination with the DMC,” Jayawardena said. “After the floods subside, we will assess the situation and work to restore electricity.”
