Majority caucus accuses Mahama of illegal tax exemption for Dzata cement
The Majority Caucus in Parliament has accused the previous Mahama administration of illegally granting tax exemptions to Dzata Cement.
They allege that former President John Dramani Mahama, through executive authorization, designated the cement company and other firms as strategic investors, providing them with tax waivers without Parliamentary approval.
Speaking to journalists in Accra on Thursday, May 30, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin called on the Minority Caucus to support the government’s industrialization efforts by offering tax exemptions to companies under the One District, One Factory policy.
“Dzata Cement benefited from unconstitutional and illegal tax incentives. According to the [1992] Constitution, only Parliament can impose or waive taxes. However, under the executive’s actions, Dzata was granted a tax waiver as a strategic investor, and we did not object because of its strategic importance,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
